"As I have recently been commissioned to paint a portrait of President Clinton for the National Portrait Gallery, it is a little hard for me to object to their taste—even though I find the vast majority of modern art to be objectionable nonsense. Not unlikely the National Portrait Gallery is trying to jump on the modernism train to arouse curiosity and increase the number of visitors; but unfortunately this direction, shared by many museums, results in exhibiting "things" devoid of art—art as it has ever been known and defined."
